Andy asked “should I cycle with low back pain?” I soon told him to “get on yer bike!”
Unsure if you can cycle with low back pain? Andy was a cyclist with a history of low back pain and a long standing issue with his left hip.
Andy booked an appointment at my clinic for an assessment to and began treatment that instigated recovery for low back pain.
Following an episode of brief treatment, Andy was soon back on his bike.
Here is what Andy had to say about his low back pain and cycling:
“The most important thing for me is that Nick doesn’t just ‘fix someone up’ to get them back on the road for a few week. Nick looks for a ‘permanent’ solution to the real issue for the patient.
I came to Nick with a painful back problem also had a look at a very longstanding problem with my left hip which meant that I could not lay comfortably on my back with my left leg straight.
The back problem is resolved and I am back to better than I was before.”
How was your physiotherapy treatment for your low back pain different compared to services you may have used elsewhere?
“Nick doesn’t exclusively look to treat the symptoms, he looks to find and treat the root cause of the problem, which may be located away from area of pain. It can take a couple of sessions to get to the ‘real’ problem but the value is that the problem is much less likely to reoccur.
Nick rarely uses ‘hands-on’ manipulation, because he wasnt the client to work out how to create and reproduce the ‘feeling’ of their solution. It is much more about the client doing the exercises and then understanding the difference that they make.
What resonated is that Nick is always looking to get to the cause of the problem and always explains what he is thinking and how he is working towards the issue. Nick stated that his aim is to get the client to ‘fix themselves’, through feeling the difference in movement and then following up with exercises so that the body remembers what is ‘right’ and continues it.”
